The Make Space Initiative was a a residency and commissioning initiative developed through a collaboration between curators Alexander Roberts, Ásgerður G. Gunnarsdóttir, Johanna Tuukkanen and Gregg Whelan.

The focus was on supporting artists from across the disciplines, working with performance-related or time-based practices to develop work in response to Kuopio, Iceland and Reykjavík, Iceland.

Artists were selected through an open call and selected for their focus on the intersection between artistic-practice, public space and political urgency.

Artists that we worked with include:

Eva Ísleifdóttir

Mari Keski-Korsu

Satu Herrala

Juli Reinartz

The Make Space Initiative was supported by the City of Reykjavík, the Goethe Institute, Nordisk Kulturfond and Kulturkontakt Nord.

Activities took place at Anti Festival in Kuopio, Finland – and Lauagardalslaug, the Nordic House, the Reykjavík Dance Atelier and the Reykjavík Arts Museum in Reykjavík, Iceland.

Make Space Initiative was produced by The Festival – an experimental performing arts platform with the agenda of experimenting with the festival as a format through various one-off curatorial initiatives. The Festival was founded and artistically led by Ásgerður G. Gunnarsdóttir and Alexander Roberts.
